The project involved the installation and commissioning of all mechanical, electrical, data, security and fire alarm services for the operation of a special needs school on a greenfield site in Chatten Essex. The nature of the education of the pupils was a major factor in the design of the school environment with soft play rooms , sensory rooms and standard class rooms to cater for the special needs of the pupils. An area was also created replicating a café and shopping experience as part of the education of the children and young adults to prepare them for a degree of independence when they leave the education system.
The head teacher of the school had been involved in the school design for approximately five years and achieved his aim of having a single storey 18 class room , plus ancillary rooms and administrative office areas for the functioning of the school.
An ammonia gas source heat pump was used as the primary heat source with back up form two gas boilers should the need arise , the HWS system was maintained at 60 degree c within the storage units and backed up with occasional heat inputs from the GSHP when required , thus providing an efficient and environmentally friendly domestic hot water system. Natural heat recovery ventilation units were used to provide ventilation to the classrooms with Co2 control , they had a night time use to provide cool air during the summer to maintain a comfortable class room temperature.
